A dear client of mine gave me a homework today (May 17th, 2012). This is the first time that I have received homework from a client. She felt that I have talked to her many times about how the brain works and there is a lot of similarity between what I told her and what Jill is talking about. Getting homework actually feels good. Most of the time I am the one asking my clients to do some homework. Hmm!

My homework is to listen to Jill Bolte's stroke of insight video at http://www.ted.com/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.html and give her my take on it.
I enjoyed listening to her video. She had a stroke due to which she lost the functions of her left brain. Her consciousness changed as a result and she experienced the beauty of living with the right brain. She talks about her out of body kind of experience. She felt enormous and expansive, full of joy, euphoria. She describes being an energy being. Listen to it for more information.

My take on this is as follows:

Our ability to transcend from left brain to right brain seamlessly is our spiritual quest on this planet. We are part of collective consciousness (right hemisphere), very expansive, full of joy, happiness, compassion, love, peace.

At the same time we are an individual (left hemisphere) with a given EGO, separated deliberately from the universal consciousness, so we can perceive the world from our EGO viewpoint, learn our lessons and focus on our growth. Ultimate goal is to learn all the lessons over lifetimes and then merge effortlessly into the universal consciousness, enjoying bliss forever. That is enlightenment, nirvana, moksha, whatever name you wish to call it.

However it is not the final destination that is our goal at this moment in this lifetime for most of us. It is the journey that is important. It is the journey that will smoothen the roughness of our inner self to reveal the smooth precious gem within. It’s like we are a drop of water separated by our EGO from the ocean right now. One day this drop of water will find its way to the ocean and enjoy being the ocean with no separation from the ocean.

There is a reason why we are a separate drop of water right now. There are no accidents in nature. We need to recognize our current form.

I feel many people are so focused on the final destination that they are missing on walking the path and enjoying the path and learning from the path. It’s good to see pictures of Mt Everest peak to know our destination, but to reach there, one has to be focused on the journey to reach the top, one has to be in the present moment, aware of each step, aware of the dangers, aware of the beauty, aware of what needs to be done to take the next step. It is this present moment awareness that will reveal the next step and the next and the next. It is in the present moment that we can learn, we can enjoy, we can grow.

Enjoy this journey you are on now.

God's (Universal consciousness, Higher consciousness or whatever name you want to call it by) purpose for you is simply perfect. He wants to show you things that only you can understand by living what you are living and by being in the place you are now.
With compassion, love and understanding for yourself and for others, we can all grow.

Farmer and Mule

Hope you are all doing fine. The weather here is cloudy today, seems like winter is on the way. I love all seasons. In winter days are shorter so you get more time to spend at home, which is good.

Recently I bought a package of things to read and in there was a section on motivational stories. Thought I would share them with you all as they are really great. This one is called Adversity. Check it out.

A farmer owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer's well. The farmer discovered the mule 'braying' -- or whatever mules do once they fall into wells. After cautiously assessing the state of affairs, the farmer felt sorry for the mule, but resolved that neither the mule nor the well was worth saving.

Rather, he called his neighbors together and told them what had occurred and asked them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

At the start, the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors proceeded shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It all of a sudden dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back: he had better shake it off and step up! This is what the old mule did, blow after blow. "Shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up!" he repeated to encourage himself.

Regardless how painful the blows, or distressing the state of affairs appeared, the old mule fought "panic" and simply kept right on shaking it off and stepping up! You guessed it! It wasn't long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well!

What appeared like it would bury him, actually end up blessing him. All because of the manner in which he handled his hardship.

I am sure you enjoyed it as much as I did. I love the phrase 'Shake it off and step up'. Remember the moral of the story and use it in your life.

Keep having fun.

Cheers,
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">"Not running, not jogging, but walking is your most efficient exercise and the only one you can safely follow all the years of your life." - Executive Health Organization

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">"Walking is man's best medicine." -Hippocrates
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Walking as a daily exercise habit can truly be a life-changing positive habit and is one of the most powerful habits for reaching your goal of a healthy trim and fit body. Over the past 20 years, there have been dozens of studies that have proven the benefits of brisk walking.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Thousands upon thousands of people have improved their health and lost weight by the diligent habit of walking. If you think that walking does not provide the same benefits as other more vigorous exercises, think again.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">A study published by the New England Journal Of Medicine showed that postmenopausal women who walked regularly lowered their risk for heart disease just as much as women who did more vigorous exercise, such as playing sports or running.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">This study suggests that walking is just as good for your heart as heavy exercise. I spoke with study author Dr. JoAnn E. Manson, Chief of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Womens Hospital, Professor of Medicine, at Harvard Medical School. She said, "The study provides compelling evidence that walking and vigorous exercise provide similar heart benefits, about a 30% to 40% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease with 30 minutes per day of either activity."
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">I also asked her about the benefits of making brisk walking a positive habit, and she responded, "they could surely walk away from heart disease and several other chronic diseases. We have also found that brisk walking for at least 3 hours a week can lower the risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes, and breast cancer.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">No pain, no gain, is an outdated notion; exercise doesn't need to be strenuous or uncomfortable. It can be easy and enjoyable." Even though the study consisted solely of women, it is likely that men would experience similar benefits from the positive habit of brisk walking.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Here are additional benefits you will receive from your habit of brisk walking:
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">* Walking burns calories and helps you lose weight and burn excess body fat.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">* Walking can help to improve your posture.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">* Walking requires no special equipment or gyms.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">* Walking can help lower blood pressure and help prevent circulatory and heart disorders.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">* Brisk, aerobic walking will give you the benefits of other exercises, such as jogging and cycling, but without the risk of injuries.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">* Walking at night can help promote better sleep.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">What are the top 10 reasons to walk?
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;"> Hiking is a great walking exercise for mind and body.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">1. Walking prevents type 2 diabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program showed that walking 150 minutes per week and losing just 7% of your body weight (12-15 pounds) can reduce your risk of diabetes by 58%.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">2. Walking strengthens your heart if you're male. In one study, mortality rates among retired men who walked less than one mile per day were nearly twice that among those who walked more than two miles per day.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">3. Walking strengthens your heart if you're female. Women in the Nurse's Health Study (72,488 female nurses) who walked three hours or more per week reduced their risk of a heart attack or other coronary event by 35% compared with women who did not walk.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;"> 4. Walking is good for your brain. In a study on walking and cognitive function, researchers found that women who walked the equivalent of an easy pace at least 1.5 hours per week had significantly better cognitive function and less cognitive decline than women who walked less than 40 minutes per week. Think about that!

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">6. Walking helps alleviate symptoms of depression. Walking for 30 minutes, three to five times per week for 12 weeks reduced symptoms of depression as measured with a standard depression questionnaire by 47%.

7. Walking reduces the risk of breast and colon cancer. Women who performed the equivalent of one hour and 15 minutes to two and a half hours per week of brisk walking had an 18% decreased risk of breast cancer compared with inactive women. Many studies have shown that exercise can prevent colon cancer, and even if an individual person develops colon cancer, the benefits of exercise appear to continue both by increasing quality of life and reducing mortality.

8. Walking improves fitness. Walking just three times a week for 30 minutes can significantly increase cardiorespiratory fitness.

9. Walking in short bouts improves fitness, too! A study of sedentary women showed that short bouts of brisk walking (three 10-minute walks per day) resulted in similar improvements in fitness and were at least as effective in decreasing body fatness as long bouts (one 30-minute walk per day).

10. Walking improves physical function. Research shows that walking improves fitness and physical function and prevents physical disability in older persons. Walking is good for your bones. Research shows that postmenopausal women who walk approximately one mile each day have higher whole-body bone density than women who walk shorter distances, and walking is also effective in slowing the rate of bone loss from the legs.

The list goes on, but if I continued, there'd be no time for you to start walking! Suffice to say that walking is certainly good for you!
I got this book in the streets in Delhi, India. An old worn out copy of the book. I was traveling and needed a book to read on the flight. What a blessing that was!

The book is not really a story or to be read from page 1 to end. You can open any page and there is something to learn and digest.

Today I am writing about Page 40, 41 in my copy of the book.

"<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Bob Proctor - Life can be absolutely phenomenal, and it should be, and it will be, when you start using The Secret.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This is your life, and it's been waiting for you to discover it! Up until now you may have been thinking that life is hard and a struggle, and so by the law of attraction you will have experienced life as hard and a struggle. Begin right now to shout to the universe, 'Life is so easy! Life is so good! All good things come to me!"
Karuna-> My thoughts now. My business and personal motto is 'Success is not an Accident'. Whatever we are enjoying or not enjoying now, is a result of the way we have programmed our mind. So if you want to experience a new definition of success in your life, you have to install a new program in your mind. Then you have to create desire, belief and expectancy in the new definition of success. And then you will attract it / manifest it in your reality. Based on tons of research on mind-body connection, there is a way of defining your goals, installing them at the right levels of your mind and then using technqiues to manifest the same in your reality or one may say attracting the same in your reality. I conduct classes and do 1X1 therapy sessions to help people to adopt this methodology.
Karuna-> I am wondering if you have already guessed The Secret or not. I don't want to rob you of the pleasure of discovering it from the book or the movie.
Sharing notes and my thoughts (KJ) about the book 'Secrets of the Millionaire Mind': Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth by T.Harv Eker.
“It all comes down to this: if your subconscious ‘financial blueprint’ is not ‘set’ for success, nothing you learn, nothing you know, and nothing you do will make much of a difference.”

~ T. Harv Eker from Secrets of the Millionaire Mind
KJ-> Think of your brain as a computer. Our beliefs are software programs loaded in our computer. If the program is not getting you the desired results, you need to update the program or install a new program that gives the results you want. So find a way to change your beliefs about your financial success. Hypnotherapy is highly effective in changing / rewiring ourselves.

PLAYING TO WIN

“The first thing I did was commit to my success and playing to win. I swore I would focus and not even consider leaving this business until I was a millionaire or more. This was radically different from my previous efforts, where, because I always thought short-term, I would constantly get side-tracked by either good opportunities or when things got tough.”

KJ-> This is really BIG! How many times we give up or start something else when the going becomes tough. I know I have done that and get tempted to do it many times. Take the easy way out. But if you really want to persue what you are passionate about and make money from it, you have to persist. Work SMART not just HARD. Use the power of your mind to help you work SMART. There will be struggles, obstacles on the path to success, we all know that. Commit to riding these struggles and coming out a winner.

DECLARATIONS VS. AFFIRMATIONS
“An affirmation states that a goal is already happening. I’m not crazy about this because, often when we affirm something that is not yet real, the little voice in our head usually responds with ‘This isn’t true, this is BS’ … On the other hand, a declaration is not saying something is true, it’s saying we have an intention of doing or being something. This is a position the little voice can buy, because we’re not stating it’s true right now, but again, it’s an intention for us in the future.”
KJ-> This really depends on how you state your affirmations according to me. You can state your affirmation in a declarative tone, something happening, in the process of happening etc versus stating a fact. So go ahead and make your declarations/ affirmations and use them repetitively and consistently. Repetition is the key to mastery (yeah, my clients know that ).

P—>T—>F—>A—>R

“Your programming leads to your thoughts; your thoughts lead to your feelings; your feelings lead to your actions; your actions lead to your results. Therefore, just as is done with a personal computer, by changing your programming, you take the first essential step to changing your results.”

KJ-> Remember the notes I did for ‘Change your Brain, Change your Thoughts’ book. Thoughts are so so powerful. They start the chain of change in you. Thoughts are linked to our feelings, our emotions and our emotions lead us to take action. So assign right thoughts with your affirmations, link feelings and emotions to these thoughts and your powerful mind will direct you to take the actions.

GROW!
“It’s simple arithmetic: ‘Your income can grow only to the extent you do.’”

“You can be a victim or you can be rich, but you can’t be both. Listen up! Every time, and I mean every time, you blame, justify, or complain, you are slitting your financial throat.”

KJ-> I think the statement says it all. It all comes back to your thoughts. Beware of blaming, complaining thoughts! They don’t lead to success. Find things you can learn from any situation and believe me, there is always something to learn from every experience.
THOUGHTS & RENT

“No thought lives in your head rent-free.”

KJ-> Amazing statement. Something to reflect on, think about. Every thought produces a physiological reaction in your body. So negative, unproductive thoughts are really really expensive. BEWARE!

STEERING WHEELS

“If you want to create wealth, it is imperative that you believe that you are at the steering wheel of life, especially your financial life.”

KJ-> Don’t act like a victim. What can I do, the economy is in a bad state etc etc. Take charge of your financial success. There are people making money in every economy, so it’s an excuse to blame the circumstances. We are the creators of our future.

ARMS & LEGS

“Let me put it bluntly: anyone who says that money isn’t important doesn’t have any! Rich people understand the importance of money and the place it has in our society. On the other hand, poor people validate their financial ineptitude by using irrelevant comparisons. They’ll argue, ‘Well, money isn’t as important as love.’ Now, is that comparison dumb or what? What’s more important, your arm or your leg? Maybe they’re both important.”

KJ-> Check your beliefs about money. What are the beliefs. Are they helping you in reaching your goal of financial independence. If not, do you need to change them, reprogram your beliefs. Take time to reflect.

DON’T COMPLAIN!

“Complaining is the absolute worst possible thing you could do for your health or your wealth. The worst! … For the next seven days, I challenge you not to complain at all.”

KJ-> This is a real big one. In fact I think we should make a goal for ourselves in 2011 to transcend complaining and that should pave the way to Nirvana But seriously do you complain a lot? Do you realize that you are complaining? Are you stating that you are powerless and a victim when you complain? Is that what you want to state? Change your thoughts! Get back in the driver seat, take control of your life.
WANTING VS. COMMITTING

“Rich people are committed to being rich. Poor people want to be rich.”

KJ-> Check it out, rich people are ‘COMMITTED’. That’s the key word. Just wanting most likely will not get you financial success. You have to have goals, you have to be COMMITTED to your goals. In fact, I do classes on Goal Setting. Not only you need to have goals, you need to learn how to define your goals, how to install them in the right levels of your brain where they can be effective, how to manifest these goals. There is real science behind all of this now.

SIZES: YOU VS. YOUR PROBLEMS

“If you have a big problem in your life, all that means is that you are being a small person!”

T. Harv has a great little story about the size of your problems vis-à-vis the size of you and your character.

Imagine you are a person with a character rating of 3 out of 10. You see a problem that is a 4 out of 10. How do you respond? You’re stressed, eh?

Now, imagine you’ve got a character that’s 7 out of 10. How’s that 4 problem look to you? Not that big of a deal, is it? Didn’t think so.

OK. NOW, imagine that you’ve worked on yourself and developed a character of 10 (!) out of 10. You see that 4 problem? Or do you even SEE it as a problem if you’re operating at a 10? I didn’t think so.

GROW and your problems will shrink. It’s that simple.

KJ-> Beautiful story. I am sure you enjoy it as much as I do.

ACTION & INACTION

“Action always beats inaction.”

KJ-> Obvious, right. But how often do we follow it. Take a moment and reflect. If your thoughts are aligned to your goals and you have the right feelings about your goals, then action will follow. So go back to learn how to define and set goals.

BLESSINGS

“Bless that which you want. If you see a person with a beautiful home, bless that person and bless that home. If you see a person with a beautiful car, bless that person and bless that car. If you see a person with a loving family, bless that person and bless that family. If you see a person with a beautiful body, bless that person and bless their body.”

KJ-> Takes away jealousy. Gratitude is a powerful emotion and if you remember the book ‘Power v/s Force’ (check it out on my blog), gratitude will raise your vibrations making it easier to reach your goals.

AFFECTING VS. INFECTING

“Energy is contagious: either you affect people or you infect people… I believe negative thinking is like having measles of the mind. Instead of itching, you get bitching; instead of scratching, you get bashing; instead of irritation, you get frustration. Now, do you really want to be close to people like that?”

KJ-> This is really funny, isn’t it. And beyond fun, it is so profound. Have you met people who drain you, infect you with negativity? Since you are reading this blog, I know you are not one of them. Find a way to protect yourself from these energy infectors / energy drainers.

MONEY MANAGEMENT 101

“I don’t know about you, but where I went to school, Money Management 101 wasn’t offered. Instead we learned about the War of 1812, which of course is something I use every single day.”

KJ-> I really have a lot of thoughts on our school system. I wish they would update it to teach practical things that will be really useful in life. I see some of the teachers are so insistent on following exact steps in maths that they will punish a kid for using a better way. Where is creative thinking? Hmm, don’t want to go down this path.

CZ = WZ

“Here’s an equation I want you to remember for the rest of your life: CZ = WZ. It means your ‘comfort zone’ equals your ‘wealth zone.’ By expanding your comfort zone, you will expand the size of your income and wealth zone.”

KJ-> You must write this on Post-It and stick it where you can see it. Are you spending your day in your comfort zone always. Did you do something outside your comfort zone today? Start expanding your comfort zone and you will expand your brains.

“Comfort kills! If your goal in life is to be comfortable, I guarantee two things. First, you will never be rich. Second, you will never be happy. Happiness doesn’t come from living a lukewarm life, always wondering what could have been. Happiness comes as a result of being in our natural state of growth and living up to our fullest potential.”

~ T. Harv Eker

KJ-> Want to end on this beautiful quote. Life is for learning and growing and not stagnating.

Have a wonderful, happy, healthy New Year 2011. As always, send in your comments, feedback on the note. Happy Blogging.
Want to thank Brain from Philosophers Notes for bringing this book to my attention and providing summaries on the book to capture our interest.
POWER V/S FORCE by Dr Hawkins, M.D, Ph.DHello Dear Friends,

It's been a while since I wrote my blog. Summer seemed to have just flown by and it's been a great summer for me. Read many many wonderful books along with work and spending time with kids, summer just rolled away. With school starting a few weeks ago, life is now getting back to a normal routine. Today I am writing about an amazing book 'Force v/s Power (The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior)' by Dr David R Hawkins, M.D, Ph.D.

"Perhaps the most important and significant book I've read in the past 10 years." - Dr Wayne W Dyer

I think many people will find the book heavy to read as it is filled with a lot of research information. If you like that then it is highly engrossing and you don't like to put the book down once you start reading it. It gives tools and techniques to raise our level of consciousness. One would need to practice these techniques to get really efficient in using them and that needs motivation, commitment and deep desire for change. I think if I had got this book a decade ago, I might even have found it uninteresting. So a lot depends on your state of the mind. True for everything though, right :)

What if EVERYONE had the knowledge to get the correct yes or no answer to any question you had? Questions on career decisions, relationships, family, purpose in life etc etc Wouldn't it be wonderful if we knew the right thing to do always.

Dr Hawkin talks about 'a database of consciousness' that we can all learn to connect to. What is also known as 'Universal Consciousness' in some eastern philosopy. He had based the connection between mind, body and spirituality on decades of research (20 plus years) and factual data.

He uncovered based on research that all subjects went weak from negative stimuli (such as pesticides, fluorescent lights, artificial sweetners), while students of spiritual disciplines, who had advanced their level of awareness, did not go weak as ordinary people did. Something had shifted in the consciousness of spiritual people that as they realized they weren't at the mercy of the world, but rather were affected by what their minds believed.

{KJ-> Imagine if you could know before you ate any food whether that food was good for your body or not, whether the food had ingredients that were harmful to you, BEFORE you ate it, WOW! that would be amazing, real amazing for your overall health. It's what you believe in that really controls how you live your life.)

The individual human mind is like a computer terminal connected to a giant database. The database is human consciousness itself, of which our own cognizance is merely an individual expression, The database is the realm of genius. Everyone by virtue of birth, has access to genius. The unlimited information contained in the database is has now been shown to be readily available to anyone in a few seconds, at any time, in any place. This is indeed an astonishing discovery, bearing the power to change lives, both individually and collectively, to a degree never yet anticipated. The database transcends time, space, and all limitations of individual consciousness.

Man thinks he lives by virtue of the forces he can control, but in fact, he's governed by power from unrevealed sources, power over which he has no control. Because power is effortless, it goes unseen and unsuspected. Force is experienced through the senses, power can be recognized only through inner awareness.

Facts are accumalated by effort, but truth reveals itself effortlessly.

Dr Hawkins has given step by step process for testing the effects of any stimuli on your body. He uses muscle testing. The test response is independent of the tester's physical strength. It's frequently dumb founding to well muscled atheletes when they go just as weak as anyone else in response to a noxious stimulus.

The most profound piece of information in the book to me is the Map of Consciouness. It is calibrated on a scale of 0 to 1000. The higher you are on the level, the more of the emotion in the level you will experience in your life. You can see that Shame, Guilt, Apathy, Fear are all lower levels and take you away from higher consciousness. It is important to remember that the scale is not arthimetic but logarithmic progression. Thus the level 300 is not twice the amplitude of 150; it is 10 to the 300th power (10 raise to 300). An increase of even a few points represents a major advance in power, the rate of increase in power as we move up the scale is enormous.

The MAP is below:

Level Log

Enlightment 700 - 1000
Peace 600
Joy 540
Love 500
Reason 400
Acceptance 350
Willingness 310
Neutrality 250
Courage 200
Pride 175
Anger 150
Desire 125
Fear 100
Grief 75
Apathy 50
Guilt 30
Shame 20

The critical response point in the scale of consciouness calibrates at level 200, which is the level associated with integrity and courage. All attitudes, thoughts, feelings, associations, entities, or historical figures below that level of calibration make a person go weak - those that calibrate higher make subjects go strong. This is the balance point between positive and negative influence.

At the levels below 200, the primary impetus is personal survival, although at the very bottom of the scale - the zone of hopelessness and depression - even this motive is lacking.

The higher levels of Fear and Anger are characterized by egocentric impulses arising from the drive for personal survival.

At the level of Pride, the survival motive may expand to comprehend the survival of others as well.

As one crosses the demarcation between positive and negative influence into Courage, the well-being of others becomes increasingly important. By the 500 level, the happiness of others emerges as the essential motivating force. The high 500's are characterized by interest in spiritual awareness, for both oneself and others, and by the 600's, the good of mankind and search for enlightment are the primary goals.

From 700 to 1000, life is dedicated to the salvation of all of humanity.

Reflecton on the map can bring a profound expansion of one's empathy for life in its variety of expressions. We see, for instance, a person in Grief which calibrates at a low energy of 75, will be in much better condition if he rises to Anger, which calibrates at 150. Anger, itself a destructive emotion, is still a low level of consciousness. If a hopeless can come to want something better (Desire - 125) and then use the energy of Anger at 150 to develop Pride (175), they may be able to take the step to Courage (200) and proceed to improve their individual and collective conditions.

Conversely a person who has arrived at a habitual state of unconditional Love will find anything less to be unacceptable. As one advances in the evolution of his individual consciousness, the process starts to perpetuate and correct itself so that self-improvement becomes a way of life.

Let's look briefly at the levels. You can get the book to read more.

Energy Level 20, Shame

Early life experiences that lead to Shame - such as sexual abuse - wrap the personality for a lifetime unless these issues are resolved by therapy. (Hypnotherapy is highly effective). The shame based personality is shy, withdrawn and intorverted. Shame based individuals compensate with perfectionism and rigidity, becoming driven and intolerant. Shame results in a vulnerability to other negative emotions, and, therefore, often produces false pride, anger and guilt.

Energy Level 30, Guilt

Guilt is used in our society to manipulate and punish, it results in a gamut of symptons of victimhood. Unconscious Guilt, results in psychosomatic disease, accident-proneness, and suicidal behaviors. Many people struggle with Guilt their entire lives while others deny it altogether.

Energy Level 50, Apathy

This level is characterized by poverty, despair and hopelessness. It is a state of helplessness, its victims, needy in every way, lack not only resources but the energy to avail themselves of what may be available. Unless external help is available by caregivers, death through passive suicide can result.

Energy Level 75, Grief

This is the level of sadness, loss and dependency. We may experience this at times, but those who remain at this level live a life of constant regret and depression. This is also the level of habitual losers and gamblers who accept failure as part of their life. In Grief, one sees sadness everywhere.

Energy Level 100, Fear
At this level a lot more energy is available - fear of danger is healthy. From this level the world looks hazardous, full of traps and threats. Once Fear is one's focus, the endless worrisome events of the world feed it. Fear becomes obsessive and can lead to jealousy, high stress levels. Because it takes energy to move to higher levels, the oppresed are unable to reach a higher level unaided.

Energy Level 125, Desire

Desire moves us to expend great effort to achieve goals or obtain rewards. Desire is also the level of addiction, where it becomes a craving more than life itself. Some people become addicted to the hunger of attention and drive others away by their constant demands. Desire has to do with accumalation and greed. But desire is unsatiable so the satisfaction of one itch is merely replaced by another. Desire can start us on the road to achivelment, to moving to higher levels of awareness.

Energy Level 150, Anger

Anger can lead to either constructive or destructive action. Anger expresses itself most often as resentment and revenge and is therefore, volatile and dangerous. Anger as a lifestyle, is expressed by irritable, explosive people who are oversensitive to slights, and become, "injustice collectors", quarrelsome, belligerent, or litigious.

Since Anger stems from frustrated want, it's based on the energy field below it. Frustration results from exaggerating the importance of desires. Anger leads easily to hatred, which has an erosive effect on all areas of a person's life.

Energy Level 175, Pride

Pride has enough energy to run the United States Marine Corps. People feel positive as they reach this level. The rise in self-esteem is a balm to all the pain at the lower levels of concsiousness. Pride generally has a good reputation and is encouraged by society. Yet, it is below the critical level of 200 on the map of consciousness. That is why pride feels good only in contrast to the lower levels. The inflated ego is vulnerable to attack. Pride remains weak as it can be knocked out to Shame, which is the threat that fires the fear of loss and pride. The downside of Pride is arrogance and denial.

Recovery from addictions is impossible because emotional problems and character defects are denied. The whole problem of denial is one of Pride.

Energy Level 200, Courage

At this level Power first appears. This is the zone of exploration, accomplishment, fortitude and determination. Life is seen as exciting, challenging and stimulating. It denotes willingness to try new things and deal with the changes and challenges of life. One is able to cope with and handle opportunities of life. At 200, the energy to learn new job skills is available. Growth and education become attainable goals. Capacity to face fears and character defects and to grow despite them. Anxiety also does not cripple endeavor. People at this level put back into the world as much energy as they take. This is where productivity begins.

The collective level of consciousness of mankind remained at 190 for many centuries and, curiously only jumped to 207 within the last decade.

Energy Level 250, Neutrality

People at this level have a sense of well-being, confident capablity to live in the world. People at this level are easy to get along with and safe to be around and associate with because they are not iinterested in conflict, competiton or guilt. They are comfortable and undisturbed emotionally. Thier attitude is nonjudgemental and doesn't lead to any need to control other people's behavior.Correspondingly due to Neutral people's value of freedom, they are difficult to control.

Energy Level 310, Willingness

This level can be seen as a gateway to higher levels. Willingness implies one has overcome inner resistance to life and is committed to participation. People become genuinely friendly, and social and economic success seem to follow automatically. The willing aren't troubled by unemployment; they will take any job when they have to, or create a career of self-employement for themselves; they don't feel demeaned by service jobs or by starting at the bottom. They are helpful to others and contribute to the good of society. They are also willing to face inner issues and don't have major learning blocks. Self Esteem is high.

Willingness is sympathetic and responsive to the needs of others. With their capacity to bounce back from adversity and learn from experience, they tend to become self-correcting. Having let go of Pride, they are willing to look at their defects and learn from others. People become excellent students. They are easily trainable and represent a considerable source of power for society.

And he goes on to explain the other levels. Do pick up a copy if this write up sparks your interest. I think the book is excellent and definitely worth reading.

Would love to have your feedback so leave me a comment. Let's make this world a better place to live in.

Keep having fun and enjoying the present.

Cheers,

After reading the Rich Dad, Poor Dad book by Robert Kayosaki, I got hooked into reading many of his other books. In fact, I am still reading 3 books simultaneously :) One of the days I shall make notes on those books and post them here.

Today is for a very interesting book called 'Do You!' by Russell Simmons.

The NY Times calls Russell Simmons one of "the most innovative and influential figures in modern American Business and culture."

The book is full of inspiring stories, wit and wisdom on everything from mind power, growing spiritually, dreaming big and doing your best. Brian Johnson of Philospoher's notes has done a great summary on this book and I am thankful to him and his team for exposing this book to me. Thank you Brian!

So here goes my take on the book. Of course you know now, my comments are in [Karuna Comments].

Create Vision

“In my experience, there’s only one thing that will always steer you toward success: That’s to

have a vision and to stick with it… Once I have a vision for a new venture, I’m going to ride that
vision until the wheels come off.”

[This is such a powerful tool, creating a vision for yourself, how can you reach a destination if you have not planned for it? Don't let the daily tasks of living boggle you down. Find your vision, put it on a piece of paper, see it, visualize it, and the way to reach you will come to you through your experiences. That's the power of your subconscious mind , yeah! I am a hypnotherapist and so a complete believer in power of your mind to manifest your vision]

So What is YOUR VISION?

Focus on Your Vision

“Focus on your vision and keep going until you hit the finish line. Don’t be one of the people

who believe in their vision at first but then give up. See it through, no matter how long it takes.
Understand that obstacles are just part of the game. Whatever you imagine, you can achieve.
Once you realize this truth, no one is going to be able to stop you.”

[Creating a vision is the first step. After all how can you go to the 2nd step before the 1st step. Am I being funny :-) Once you have a vision, then align your beliefs to your vision. After all if you don't believe in your vision how do you expect others to ? Find those self limiting beliefs that are obstacles to your reaching your vision and figure out how you can replace those beliefs. BTW, hypnotherapy is a wonderful wonderful therapy for removing self limiting beliefs. Once you have aligned your beliefs to your vision, then there will be expectancy and that is a critical step to achieving your vision. Once you have visions, beliefs and expectancy aligned, no one can stop you from reaching your vision]

Don’t Stall

“The pain that’s created by avoiding hard work is actually much worse than any pain created from the actual work itself. Because if you don’t begin to work on those ideas that God has blessed you with, they will become stagnant inside of you and eventually begin to eat away at you. You might seem OK on the outside, but inside you will be ill from not getting those ideas out of your heart and into the world. Stalling leads to sickness. But taking steps, even baby steps, always leads to success.”

[The most wonderful plans in the world are useless unless we learn to act on them. So you have your vision, you aligned it with your beliefs and expectancy. Now GET TO THE NEXT STEP....TAKE ACTION. My pet statement and I have quite a few of these pet statements :-), Tomorrow will only bring more of what you have today. So don't wait for tomorrow to start moving towards your vision. Start NOW! Take baby steps, remember my earlier blogs talking about Kaizen? Google it. Baby steps are the way to go. In a research they did on older people. they found that people with goals and mission live longer, live healthier. Makes sense does that not? When you are walking towards your purpose in life, things coincidently just align on the way. But first you have to start WALKING on the path.]

AGE & #’S

“Age ain’t nothing but a number.”

[Stop using Age as an excuse! Get past this belief, move forward. Remember the 66 year young Colonel who started Kentucky Fried Chicken? Did age stop him from starting KFC? So why are you different?]

OBSTACLES

“Whatever obstacles appear in your path, put your head down and get past them. Those obstacles aren’t real. They’re just God’s way of testing you. He’s asking you, ‘Do you want to make it or not?’”

[HA! I really like this. Cool! So do you want to make it or not??? Sit back and think.]

EYE ON THE PATH

“I know some people say ‘Keep your eyes on the prize,’ but I disagree. When your eyes are stuck on the prize, you’re going to keep stumbling and crashing into things. If you really want to get ahead, you’ve got to keep your eyes focused on the path.”

[So true, so true. I see that in athletes especially, some of them are so focussed on winning or loosing that they lose their mental game and can't perform. You have to let go of the reward and just persists on the path]

ALWAYS DO YOU

“When I talk about Doing You, I’m really just asking you to listen to that voice of God inside of you again.”

[Russell talks a lot on spirituality in his book which I have not mentioned here. He talks about listening to your inner voice, your intuition, your guts and following it. Learning to tune within you and paying attention to your inner self. Do you do that? Do you? The answers to our problems lie within us, if we just learn to quiet down and tune in to our inner frequency. Meditation, Self Hypnosis are great great methods to reach our inner self, to tune within].

Keep having fun. Together we can make this planet a better place for you and me.

This is truly a marvelous book. I had it on my list of books to read but since my list was long I did not really know much of this book. Happened to see it in Borders when I was there with my kids to spend the afternoon. Read a few chapters and decided I have to have my personal copy of it.

He explains things so even a 9 year old can understand it. The book weaves the information through 2 main characters the Rich dad and the Poor dad. He talks about having 2 dads one who was highly educated (Ph.D) from the best universities in US (his dad) and the other who passed just 8th grade (his friend's dad who mentored him). The differing philosopy on life by these 2 dads taught Robert Kiyosaki a lot. The educated dad believed in good education, working for a good company, working hard to make it in life. The other believed in a good education, financial intelligence, (financial intelligence not taught in schools), working smart.

What really impressed me about the book is his emphasis on our belief systems, our thoughts, our fears and learning to give back to community. One can get rich (lottery maybe) but unless you are financially intelligent you can lose all that money. Remember the .dot com bust and how many of us lost money? Now I see we were not financially intelligent, it was not the economy but how we played the cards.

All the talk about beliefs, power of our thoughts, removing fears, giving back resonates so well with what I do as a hypnotherapist. It's the perfect tuning on my mission and his :)

So a few extracts from the book and of course my comments in braces (my comments). Here goes:

MONEY & JOB
“Just know that it’s fear that keeps most people working at a job. The fear of not paying their
bills. The fear of being fired. The fear of not having enough money. The fear of starting over.
That’s the price of studying to learn a profession or trade, and then working for money. Most
people become a slave to money… and then get angry at their boss.”

(Does it ring any bells for you? Are you in the rat race and not able to get out because of your fears about money, your beliefs about money? Angry at your boss for not giving you the well deserved bonus or raise? Are these fears affecting your quality of life? Not found a way out? Well, read Kiyosaki's books and you will find a new direction, a new approach).

As T. Harv Eker says in his inspiring and practical book Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: “You can be a victim or you can be rich, but you can’t be both.

Our thoughts shape our lives

Being a product of two strong dads allowed me the luxury of observing the effects that different thoughts have on one's life. I noticed that people really do shape their lives through their thoughts.

(Do you know that every thought you have creates a physiological response in your body? That's how powerful your thoughts are. Automatic Negative thoughts,ANT's as per Dr Daniel Amen, can destroy your brain cells. Our repetitive thoughts creates habits, beliefs. Self limiting beliefs can stop you from reaching your full potential and hamper the quality of your life sometimes significantly).

Poor Dad vs. Rich Dad

My Poor Dad Said "My house is an asset."
My Rich Dad Said "My house is a liability."

Rich dad says, "If you stop working today, an asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money from your pocket. Too often people call liabilities assets. It's important to know the difference between the two.
My Poor Dad Said "I can't afford it."
My Rich Dad Said "How can I afford it?"

The statement "I can't afford it" shuts down your thinking. By asking the right question, you mind opens up and looks for answers.

My Poor Dad Said "The reason I'm not rich is because I have you kids."
My Rich Dad Said "The reason I must be rich is because I have you kids."
My Poor Dad Said "I'm not interested in money."
My Rich Dad Said "Money is power."

My Poor Dad Said "When it comes to money, play it safe - don't take risks."
My Rich Dad Said "Learn how to manage risk."

My Poor Dad Said "Pay myself last."
My Rich Dad Said "Pay myself first."

Rich Dad always took a percentage off the top of any income he earned. He put that money into an investment account that went toward purchasing his assets. Poor Dad spent all his money first and never had any remaining for investments.

My Poor Dad Believed that the company you worked for or the government should take care of your financial needs.
My Rich Dad Believed in financial self-reliance and financial responsibility.
My Poor Dad Focused only on academic literacy.
My Rich Dad Focused on financial literacy as well as academic literacy.

My Poor Dad Learned only the vocabulary of academia.
My Rich Dad Learned the vocabulary of finance – "Your words are the most valuable tools you have."

My Poor Dad "I work for my money."
My Rich Dad "My money works for me."

My Poor Dad Thought that making more money would solve his financial problem.
My Rich Dad Knew that financial education was the answer to his financial problems: "It's not how much money you make that's important – it's how much money you keep and how long you keep it."

Understanding the difference in attitudes between Rich Dad and Poor Dad is essential to taking the first steps to financial freedom.

“The poor and the middle class work for money.
The rich have money work for them.”
~ Robert Kiyosaki

FINANCIAL LITERACY
“I am concerned that too many people are focused too much on money and not on their greatest wealth, which is their education. If people are prepared to be flexible, keep an open mind and learn, they will grow richer and richer through the changes. If they think money will solve the problems, I am afraid those people will have a rough ride. Intelligence solves problems and produces money. Money without financial intelligence is money soon gone.”

(Robert lays emphasis on education, spending time to learn, attending at least a couple of seminars a year on new ideas and formulas, spending time on your own business - wealthy via financial intelligence, taking charge of your financial life, listening to experts and following those who have walked the talk. There are tons of people even your friends and family who are always ready to find faults with what you are planning to do. The important thing to consider is have they walked on the path you are going, do they have experience in what you are trying to do? If not, find someone who is successful and then listen to them. Cooool!!)

“I want to teach you to master the power of money. Not be afraid of it. And they don’t teach that in school. If you don’t learn it, you become a slave to money.”
~ Rich Dad

As Byron Katie says in Loving What Is: “The greatest stock market you can invest in is yourself. Finding this truth is better than finding a gold mine.”

He uses simple diagrams to explain financial terms, so simple that even kids can understand it. It really gave me a good insight and another way at looking at the same financial terms I was aware of. I was aware of the words (such as expenses, income, liabilities, assets etc) but not the true intelligence of these words till I started reading Robert Kiyosaki's books.

“The greatest losses of all are those from missed opportunities. If all your money is tied up in your house, you may be forced to work harder because your money continues blowing out of the expense column, instead of adding to the asset column, the classic middle class cash flow problem.”

WEALTH
“Wealth is a person’s ability to survive so many number of days forward… or if I stopped working today, how long could I survive?”

(Now think, do you desire money or do you desire being wealthy?)

Remember: “The single most powerful asset we all have is our mind. If it is trained well, it can create enormous wealth in what seems to be an instant.”

FOCUS
“If you have little money and you want to be rich, you must first be ‘focused,’ not ‘balanced.’ If you look at anyone successful, at the start they were not balanced. Balanced people go nowhere. They stay in one spot. To make progress, you must first go unbalanced. Just look at how you make progress walking.”

(Being balanced is studying, working hard, following the well trodden path. Being unbalanced is thinking out of the box, thinking different from norm)

FEAR (AGAIN)
“We all have tremendous potential, and we all are blessed with gifts. Yet, the one thing that holds all of us back is some degree of self-doubt. It is not so much the lack of technical information that holds us back, but more the lack of self-confidence.”

“I strongly urge students to learn to take risks, to be bold, to let their genius convert that fear into power and brilliance.”
~ Robert Kiyosaki

GIVE, GIVE, GIVE!!

“Whenever you feel ‘short’ or in ‘need’ of something, give what you want first and it will come back in buckets. That is true for money, a smile, love, friendship. I know it is often the last thing a person may want to do, but it has always worked for me. I just trust that the principle of reciprocity is true, and I give what I want.”

This echoes Deepak Chopra’s wisdom from The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success (see Notes) where he says: “Practicing the Law of Giving is actually very simple; if you want joy, give joy to others; if you want love, learn to give love; if you want attention and appreciation, learn to give attention and appreciation; if you want material affluence, help others to become materially affluent. In fact, the easiest way to get what you want is to help others get what they want.”

(Going back to my earlier blogs, . To change things, you have to change somethings in your life. DO IT NOW. Tomorrow will only bring more of what you have today. Act now. Give what you want from life and see it come back to you in buckets).

That's all for now. Keep having fun. Share you thoughts, ideas with everyone. Write your comments. The more you share the more you learn. Let's make this a better planet together. Learn and share.Karuna Jain, C.Ht, M.Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14237578579318240418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893162180841078202.post-8149014202673548252010-04-26T12:23:00.000-07:002010-04-26T12:23:12.563-07:00Focus on what you love more than what you don't. Aim for 1% improvementHello All,

We talked about these 2 points via email last week (Apr 19th 2010 week). I thought I would put it on the blog so we can all comment on it.

Focus on what you love about your life a lot more than what you don't like

Aim for a 1% improvement every single day

Making a 1% improvement is definitely something we can do don't you agree? Also learning to focus on what is going right in your life and all that you are grateful for is something that can lead to the 1% improvement. It sounds easy to do, but is it really? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Let's discuss the steps we need to follow to improve ourselves.

Step 1: Read or hear about something that will help you improve. Like reading my blog :)

Step 2: Reflect on what you read or hear and what it really means to you. Not what the other person said but what does it mean to you. An apple is sweet. This statement means different things to different people. Why? because the definition of sweet varies. Is it as sweet as chocolate? or juice? or sweets? or Mary? or ? So we have all stored the sweet definition is our sub conscious mind. Hence reflecting on what a word means to us is important step. You can share your insights and meanings with others by leaving a comment on the blog. Remember, when we have to write, we pay more attention and relect more. So WRITE A COMMENT ON THE BLOG.

Step 3: TAKE ACTION. Put the learning into your life experience. That's the final step in self improvement and the most important. Otherwise it is only knowledge, good for discussion, for arguing. Only when we take action on what we learn, we improve. The power of compounding is phenomenal. We can all take action by pinning down our experiences as comments on the blog. The more we share, the more we learn. Also knowing what others did to improve can give us ideas on things we can do. Small steps. Kaizen. Remember?

I would love to learn from you. I still need to figure out how to make the writing comments more intutitive on the blog.

Keep having fun.

Back in Jan 2009 (more than a year ago), I say a program on TV, Magnificent Mind at any Age. Another program I saw of Dr Amen in Dec '08 was called 'Change your Brain, Change your Life'. The programs are books and CD collections by Dr Daniel Amen, M.D. I wonder if any of you got an opportunity to see these programs on KQED channel. Tons of good information about being Brain Healthy in the program. Basic advice to be brain healthy is of what we all know, eating right and exercising. He has given lots of good advice in the 2 programs. Some of my takeaways from his talk show are as below. My comments are as usual in braces (....). Enjoy.

'Focus on what you love about your life a lot more than what you don't like'. (I read something similar on how a heart full of gratitude expands the mind much faster, making it healthier, stronger and happier. After all gratitude releases serotonin in your brains, the substance that is present in anti-depressant pills. So why not produce it naturally in your body without side effects)

The best way to help yourself is to help others. (Have you done something for someone without expecting anything in return? Did you notice how good you felt inside and the wonderful sense of well being?. If you have not done that yet, don't miss out on this chance to feel REAL good inside. Help others without expecting anything back. REAL JOY!)

There is no time like the present to start. The longer you allow a problem to fester, the harder it is to treat. So stop it. Now is the time to get started. (Like I mentioned in one of the other blog article, today will only bring more of what you got yesterday. So to change yourself, start now, there is no better time than NOW!)

Dr Daniel was talking about CD set 'Magnificent Mind with Medical Hypnosis'. Some of his comments on Hypnosis are as follows.

Hypnosis is very powerful. People think it's not science. Absolutely Science. There is imaging studies done which show that when you are in trance, it activates the happy side of your brain. So you are happier and more focused. (Makes sense to me, after all I am a certified Hypnotherapist :)

What hypnosis does is decrease your focus on everything else and gets the focus internal, so you bring the focus to where you are more teachable, more open. A lot of people are afraid of hypnosis. They say 'I am not going to do that". But when hypnosis does it teach people to be in control of themselves. Hypnosis is such a powerful tool and I have used it in my practice for 27 years. Hypnosis is such a wonderful thing that all of us should benefit from it and use it. It's simple.

Meditation, Guided Imagery (part of Hypnotherapy) helps improve focus, concentration, memory. Both Meditation and Hypnosis produce similar Alpha, Beta wavelengths in the brain, activating more parts of your brain thereby improving many aspects of your life

(you can lose upto 80,000 brain cells a day as per Dr Daniel Amen. But with Meditation/ Hypnosis you can regrow your brain cells and balance the various lobes in the brain. COOOOL!. Meditation takes years and years of practice to master. However Self Hypnosis can be learnt in days and mastered within weeks. Now why would you not put in some self effort to improve your life).

So take the first step to improve your life. Incorporate natural methods to improve your brain which will automatically improve your life. I started my practice with the logo 'Expand your Brain, Expand your Life' and it's such a coincidence that Dr Daniel Amen's program (Change your Brain, Change your Life), I saw in Dec '08 is so closely linked to my logo. I remember in the movie Kungfu Panda, the master saying 'There are no accidents' :)

If you get a chance, go get the books from the library and read them. Some really great tips and information in the books. Dr Amen's work with brain imaging is fascinating.

Other books I am reading simultaneously are 'Health Intuition' by Karen Grace Kassy and 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' bestseller. Will try and make some notes on these books and post them later.

Keep having fun and do share your comments on this article. Click on the link after the article on 'Create a link' and that allows you to post a comment. Not very intuitive but I still have not figured out how to rename the link message. In case you gurus know how to, let me know via comments or send me an email at ExpandMind@yahoo.com.

Remember, social transformation begins by individual transformation. If we improve ourselves even 1% every month, we can be so much better in the years to come, right? Better us, better planet.

Happy blogging.
Karuna Jain, C.Ht, M.Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14237578579318240418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893162180841078202.post-53385314973397742992010-04-10T22:47:00.000-07:002010-04-15T12:16:31.570-07:00Integrative Nutrition (Feed Your Hunger for Health & Happiness) by Joshua RosenthalHello All,

I really want to write more often as I read nearly every day but it is still a new habit to make notes. So sorry for not sharing titbits daily. Maybe this is in its own way, a good thing. It does take time to assimilate and include in our experience the wisdom from these books. So you could read the same blog daily and maybe every time you read, you may discover you understand things a wee bit differently.

I really enjoyed this book. More so since I believe in Joshua's wisdom here. It's not just enough to eat healthy food, we need an integrated look at all aspects of our life. Are we having healthy thoughts, healthy mental and emotional health or are we just focusing on the physical health. So much research has shown that many of our physical health issues are a result of our emotions. So should we not be smarter and pay attention to our emotional health as well? I believe that if we take care of our emotional and mental health, we will enjoy good healthy physical health automatically.

Now from the book, here are some notes. My viewpoints are enclosed in braces (MY COMMENTS).

Did you know that:

* In 2004, 66% of Americans were overweight or obese.

* We spend an exorbitant amount of money on medications and operations while virtually nothing is spend on prevention, education and holistic health.

* Overweight people now outnumber undernourished people in the world.

* The average American now consumes more than 100 lbs of sugar and sweeteners per year. In contrast, Americans consume an average of 8 lbs of broccoli.

(Startling facts right? Well we need to ask ourselves, what are we doing to take care of our emotions and feelings especially the negative energy draining emotions and feelings we store. Do we have any plan to handle these? Or are we waiting for health issues to start and the doctor recommendations to take action. And would our medical system prescribe ways to naturally heal our mental and emotional self? Or would the system provide more and more medications for each health issue you face? Unfortunately in my practice as certified hypnotherapist, I see many clients who are on so many different medications and pills. I shudder to think of all the side effects from these pills and their impact on your long term health. There are so many alternative, all natural, no medications ways of learning to manage our overall health. Find the one that works for you and put in some self effort. The best asset you can store for your old age is GOOD HEALTH, GOOD, HAPPY MEMORIES, GOOD FRIENDS. What do you think? Would love to hear your experience and comments)

The Integrative Nutrition Plan: 12 Steps

1. Drink more water (Yeah, you take a bath everyday to clean your external body, what about cleaning your internal body? Drink water on an empty stomach, as per Yoga, every morning to take a natural internal, cleansing bath).

2. Practice cooking (Take charge of the ingredients that go into your food)

3. Increase whole grains

4. Increase sweet vegetables (remember the rainbow, eat vegetables of every color sometime during the week to get all different nutrients and vitamins naturally).

5. Increase leafy green vegetables (organic vegetables have a much greater percentage of nutrients. I read that an organic tomato has 55% more beta carotene than regular non organic tomato, WOW!)

6. Experiment with protein

7. Eat less meat, dairy, sugar and chemicalized, artificial junk foods; consume less coffee, alcohol and tabacco.

8. Develop easy and reliable habits to nurture your body (enhance your emotional health. Yeah you are reading this blog so you are on your way :)

9. Have healthy relationships that support you

10. Find physical activity that supports you (start with baby steps and gradually increase. Park your car further away so you can walk more, climb stairs instead of elevators/escalators, keep things away so you need to walk to get them. I am sure you can be imaginative :) Find a buddy to exercise with, it really helps a lot. Do exercise that is fun so if you enjoy playing a sport, do that, you enjoy dancing, do that. Whatever works for you :)

11. Find work you love or a way to love the work you have (Hypnotherapy can really help)

12. Develop a spiritual practice (this really rhymes with me. You have to nurture your spiritual self to lead a balanced, happy, healthy life)

(Don't wait for tomorrow to start. Tomorrow will only bring more of what you have today. To change your tomorrow you have to start today. You reap what you sow :) Start with simpler things, the low hanging fruits. Things that you can incorporate easily. It's called Kaizen approach. Research Kaizen and you can learn more. Basically it means take baby steps. Each positive change will fuel your positive energy levels and give you the momemtum you need to incorporate more positive changes. It's not really that difficult to make one small positive change and then keep building on it. And if change is very difficult, then find a good hypnotherapist and have him/her help you).

THE BASICS ARE SIMPLE

In spite of the enormous amount of confusing and contradictory information that regularly floods the world of nutrition, the basics are simple. Most people would be much better off consuming less meat, milk, sugar, chemicalized, artificial junk food, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco and increasing consumption of water, whole grains and vegetables, especiallly dark leafy greens.

There is also a chapter on "Foods to Avoid or Minimize".

One of the Big Ideas as we optimize our diet is to "crowd out" the less healthy stuff by focusing on the positive. Rather than try to get rid of some pesky item, focus on ADDING something we "know" is great for us. As we do that, we tend to naturally (and surprisingly quickly) "crowd out the bad stuff".

(So instead of trying to give up things you love, just ADD new healthy choices to your regular menu. You will automatically eat less of the the unhealthy things on your plate. Yeah, baby steps works!)

Joshua presents his "90-10 Diet" in the beginning of the book after he's gone thorugh the pros and cons of all the leading diets out there. The rule is simple: 90% of the time eat what is good and healthy for you, and 10% of the time eat whatever you feel like eating.

(COOOL :)

TIME TO CLEAN OUT YOUR FRIENDSHIP CLOSET?

I invite you to look at your friendships the same way people look at their wardrobes. You've probably kept many clothes hanging in your closet that you haven't worn for years. Maybe you are hoping they'll come back into style, or maybe they don't quite fit, but you keep them in the back for sentimental reasons.

It's the same with friends. If you think of everyone you know, chances are you will find at least a few people from your past who don't really belong in your present. In fact, if you're honest with yourself, you'll admit you find their company draining, but you keep them in your wardrobe of friends even if they have little to offer in return. Perhaps they are smokers, drinkers or drug users and you've moved on from that scene. They could be past lovers who keep hanging around, or people whose lives are always in crisis, requiring large amounts of time or energy from you, never to return the favor. Remember, you're their friend, not their therapist.

(Try both, cleaning out your clothes wardrobe and friends wardrobe and maybe go shopping for new friends!)

DO YOU LOVE YOUR WORK?

In today's society, most of us spend 8 to 10 hours a day at work and very little time with our loved ones. While we are choosy about who we relate with intimately, we spend years doing work we can't stand and that may be completely opposed to our personal values. Think about it for a moment. We have 24 hours each day. We sleep for 8 hours, work for 8 to 10 hours and have 6 to 8 hours left for other activities. More than 1/2 our waking hours is spend working - even more if we include commuting. Work is a huge part of our daily routine, yet how many of us really enjoy it? How many of us complain constantly about what we do, but feel powerless to change it? This feeling of helplessness is not a nourishing lifestyle.

Joshua has some great ideas/exercises in the book to help you with this.

(I highly recommend taking the Relationship Personality class that I do. You will learn a lot about how you behave in any relationships, your subconscious behavior that you may not even be aware of. Also you will learn other relationship personalities and how you can work best with these personalities. For many of us, having great working relationships can offset some of the other issues in a job. Go to my website http://www.kjhypnotherapycenter.com/ to check out the classes or send me an email to let me know you are interested so I can keep you informed about future classes. The next one is on Apr 24th, 2010. It is a workshop lasting an hour and half).

FITTING IN VS. FITTING OUT

Escaping the matrix is a key step to creating true health and happiness. Start by noticing the places in your life where you feel inauthentic. Are there certain people who you have difficulty expressing your true self around? In what circumstances do you try to fit into other people's expectations? Without self-judgement, begin to notice when and where this occurs, and start building the confidence to express your true self at all times, to embrace what makes you different from the norm. By loving yourself completely, you will reach a new height of health that no food could ever give you. And by expressing your authentic self, your life force will soar, your heart will open, and the world will never look the same.

One of the quotes I like in the book is as follows:

"I am a great believer in encouraging people to slow down. Courage is also required to stand up and say, "Okay, everyone. You can pass me on the fast track to success. I've tasted it, understood it, and I am no longer interested in keeping up because I know now that the prices is too high. I want to stay true to myself, and I want to enjoy myself. These are my priorities." - Joshua Rosenthal.

I do want to thank Brain Johnson of PhilosopherNotes for making me aware of this book and so many other great books. Thank you Brain. Every cent I paid by subscribing to Philosopher Notes is worth it in GOLD.

That's all for now. Keep having fun.

Warm regards,
I read these book years ago and am still influenced by it. I have read several other self development books and I see the common thread amongst various authors on this topic. I think this book presents the idea much more effectively. My opinion of course :)
Let me share a 3 to 5 minute tidbit from this book.
RADICAL ACCEPTANCE by Tara Brach, PhD

For many of us, feelings of deficiency are right around the corner. It doesn't take much-just hearing of someone else's accomplishments, being criticized, getting into an argument, making a mistake at work-to make us feel that we are not okay.
As a friend of mine put it, "Feeling that something is wrong with me is the invisible and toxic gas I am always breathing.” When we experience our lives through this lens of personal insufficiency, we are imprisoned in what I call the trance of unworthiness. Trapped in this trance, we are unable to perceive the truth of who we really are.
We don't have to wait till our deathbed to realize what a waste of our precious lives it is to carry the belief that something is wrong with us. Yet because our habits of feeling insufficient are so strong, awakening from the trance involves not only inner resolve, but also an active training of the heart and mind.
Radical Acceptance reverses our habit of living at war with experiences that are unfamiliar, frightening or intense. It is the necessary antidote to years of neglecting ourselves, years of judging and treating ourselves harshly, years of rejecting this moment's experience. Radical Acceptance is the willingness to experience ourselves and our lives as it is. A moment of Radical Acceptance is a moment of genuine freedom.
The practice of Radical Acceptance runs at such crosscurrents to our culture of nonacceptance that it can be difficult to understand. Radical Acceptance is not resignation. Radical Acceptance does not mean defining ourselves by our limitations. It is not an excuse for withdrawal. Radical Acceptance is not self-indulgence. It does not make us passive.

The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.
As author Storm Jameson puts it:
"There is only one world pressing against you at this minute. There is only 1 minute in which you are alive, this minute here and now. The only way to live is by accepting each minute as an unrepeatable miracle."
(Do you see the connection between this post and the earlier post living in day-tight compartments? If in this minute we can let go of the past and the uncertainties of the future, we can enjoy the minute. You have to put in self effort to train your mind so you can live to the fullest. In this minute, just this minute can you enjoy what you are doing? If you are enjoying a cup of coffee now, can you focus your full attention to the coffee and enjoy every sip to the fullest? Taking baby steps is the way to get started. The journey of 1000 miles starts with a step. So find moments during your day, to just enjoy a minute here and a minute there. Train your mind to focus on each moment. It is your life, take charge).
Have a wonderful day. Bye for nowKaruna Jain, C.Ht, M.Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14237578579318240418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893162180841078202.post-70497928974597162192010-03-22T12:44:00.000-07:002010-03-22T12:48:07.797-07:00How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie.Dear Friends,

Past is history, future is a mystery, the present is a gift. Yeah present, gift get it? :) Enjoy your presents (BIG MESSAGE). Here are a couple of interesting titbits from this wonderful book. With my comments in braces () of course.

Seventy per cent of all patients who come to physicians could cure themselves if they got rid of their fears and worries.

Carnegie quotes a Dr Montague: "You do not get stomach ulcers from what you eat. You get ulcers from what is eating you."

(Worth thinking about? Many of our bodily symptoms are caused at the emotional level. The body follows where the mind leads. So learning to master your mind can help you alleviate so many bodily issues. I personally think it's due to the body/mind connection being broken or just weak. Your body gives you messages all the time but you just don't listen. In fact we have ignored the messages for so long that now we are not even aware we are getting messages from within. Messages such as:
'Time to eat'. Our response 'Nope, I am too busy'.
'Take rest, you are tired'. Our response 'Are you kidding, I have tons of tasks to do'.
'Your ankle needs rest'. Our response 'It's just an ache. If I ignore it, it will go away'.
Sounds familiar?)

The first big idea in the book is 'LIVE IN "DAY_TIGHT COMPARTMENTS"
1. Do you tend to put off living in the present in order to worry about the future or yearn for some 'magical rose garden over the horizon'?

2. Do you sometimes embitter the present by regretting things that happened in the past - that are over and done with? (are you carrying the weight of your past on your shoulders. Imagine walking every moment of your life carrying a 100 lb weight on your head or shoulder? Learn techniques to let go of the past. Hypnotherapy can help.)

3. Do you get up in the morning determined to 'Seize the day' - to get the utmost out of the 24 hours? (Is a lion chasing you constantly?)

4. Can you get more out of life by 'living in day-tight compartments'? (Take a pause and reflect on this)

5. When will you start to do this? Next week?....Tomorrow?...Today?"

(Waiting for time does not help. Time will only bring more of what you have been getting already. If you have to change, you need to take POSITIVE steps RIGHT NOW. You are the creator of your future. It's only in the NOW that you can take action to create the future you desire. There are no magical pills to create the future you desire. You have to put in Self Effort and be persistent. But the important thing is to WORK SMART and NOT HARD. I truly believe success is not an accident. You may not like the success you have today but remember you created it, mostly subconsciouly with your beliefs.)

One of the quotes I like in the book is as follows:

'I spent 12 years working with cattle; yet I never saw a Jersey cow running a temperature because the pasture was burning from lack of rain or because of sleet and cold or because her boy friend is paying too much attention to another heffer. The animals confront night, storms, and hunger calmly; so they never have nervous breakdowns or stomach ulcers, and they never go insame.' - Dale Carnegie.

The Big Idea: "Shut the iron doors on the past and the future. Live in Day-Tight Compartments".

(Learn from your past, plan your future, but the present is the only moment where you can take ACTION).

Have a wonderful day. Great book, great ideas. Sharing some with you all. Also I am a fan of Dr Daniel Amen and really enjoyed reading his book 'Change your brain, Change your life' (I hope I remember the title correctly, if not, do forgive me, it is something along these lines). Our mind is always ‘on’. According to scientists, we have about 60,000 thoughts a day. That’s one thought per second during every waking hour. No wonder we’re so tired at the end of the day! Our negative experiences stick to us like Velcro, while our positive experiences slide right off us like Teflon. In fact, researchers have found that it takes numerous positive experiences to overcome a single negative one! Today is such a beautiful day here in California. Bright and sunny. It going to be in the 70's this entire week. Sounds wonderful. Am sorry to hear about the flooding in the midwest. Weather patterns are changing in so many places in the world. Is it global warming or cooling. Hmmm!

Do you know how you brain works? I mean functionally and not the science of nerves, tissues etc. Understanding this might help you understand yourself better and why it is difficult to change yourselves. So a small lesson follows.

There are several components to the brain. In layman terms, we have the outer layer of our mind, the conscious mind. This is the mind we are most aware of during waking hours. It is supposed to be roughly 10% to 12% of our total brain power. This is the mind that takes in input from the environment (TV, Radio, Books, talking to people etc), analyzes the inputs and at times takes decisions. Based on research we use probably 5% to 6% of this mind only.

Underneath the conscious layer are several layers of the mind. For simplicity I cam calling all these layers as subconscious mind. This is roughly 90% of our brain power. For most of us, these layers of mind are beyond our control. There are various functions performed by these deeper layers of the mind. These are:

1. Automatic processes in our body such as circulation of blood, digestion of food, secretion of harmones etc etc. There are some indian gurus who can control their heart beat, blood pressure etc but for most of us these are automatic processes.

2. All our experiences since childhood and all emotions attached to the experiences are stored in the subconscious layers of the mind. Have you noticed when you meet a long lost friend after decades, all the emotions and feelings for that person surfaces to our conscious mind? We may not have thought of that person in years yet all our feelings are stored deep in our mind. There are people who carry revenge and hatred for decades and decades in their mind. All the stored negative energy affects us.

3. All our beliefs and values by which we live our life are also stored at the subconscious level. These impact our analyzing and decision making at the conscious mind. This is right, that is wrong, this is the correct behavior, that should not be done etc etc are all based on our beliefs and values. Since each one of us have differing beliefs and values, we all judge things differently.

4. Our habits are part of the deeper layers of the mind also. They are programmed and stored there and our habits prompt us to behave in a certain manner. You may not be aware of the many habits you have cultivated. Start noticing. You may realize you wear your clothes in a fixed order everyday, you like to start your day brushing your teeth, you like to eat in a fixed order etc etc. Habits are good, they structure our lives and allow us to go on without having to make a decision on everything. However habits that limit the quality of our life need changing.

5. Our behavior is mostly a product of our experiences, our beliefs and values, our habits. The same situation will evoke different behaviors from many people.

6. Your fears and phobias are stored at the subconsious mind. Your fears are a result of your experiences and phobias are fears due to unknown reasons. You were bit by a dog when you were small and now you have a fear of dogs. No amount of rationalization and statistics can remove your fear because the subconscious mind does not rationalize.

You must be wondering why this discussion on brains. Well, if we want to change something in your life such as habits or your self limiting beliefs (I am not good enough, I am not capable of..., I can never be slim, and so on) you need to learn how to access that deeper layer of the mind where this information is stored, to change things. If you try to change using just the conscious mind it is extremely difficult. You can apply will power to change but unless you can sustain will power for a looooog period of time, you will slip back into old habits, old behaviors. The subscious mind is 7 to 8 times stronger than the conscious mind and so it always wins.

Now if you can learn techniques to access the deeper layers of the mind and make changes directly in those layers, than you don't need conscious mind and will power at all to live your life differently. You can reprogram yourselves by going directly to the area of the mind where your self limiting beliefs are stored and change them there. Once you change your belief (such as believing I can become slimmer and fit) than you subscious mind will help you to live your life by the new belief.

Let's take the case of wanting to lose weight. Obesity is a big problem now. In fact World Health Organization predicts that obesity will the the 2nd largest illness in the world after Heart disease. Whoooo!

So you want to lose weight. You know you have to change some habits and behaviors and most likely some beliefs to lose weight and more importantly to maintain the weight loss. You can diet and lose weight but if you have not changed the underlying old programs in your mind, you will slip back into old habits very soon after your diet is over. Now your body will store more fat since it does not know when you might strave it again. And the yo-you will continue, lose weight, put on weight, another diet, again put on weight. Sounds familiar?

Now if you can change your beliefs about food and get the same pleasure and enjoyment out of healthy food that you get out of junk food, then you will automatically desire and eat healthy food only. Just like you crave and enjoy junk food (you believe subconsciously and consciously that the junk food taste so good) because of your existings beliefs, you will start eating and enjoying healthy food based on new beliefs. Isn't this approach better than using will power to eat healthy food and hating the healthy food?

You can change your beliefs about exercise and start enjoying exercising. Once the beliefs, habits are changed, your behavior will reflect the new beliefs and habits.

Bottom line, learn techniques to help you change your deeper layers of mind to change your life and expand the quality of your life. You are in charge of your life. You can change and improve.

Both meditation and self hypnosis provide access to deeper layers of the mind. I used to meditate for years and it took me years to learn to get into meditative state. But learning hypnosis is much easier and faster. Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration and a very natural state for the body. We slip in and out of hypnosis many many times during the day. You are watching a TV program and totally engrossed in the program, you are in hypnosis. Learn how you can use this focused state of concentration to access deeper layers of your mind and start changing your life. How can we enhance the quality of our relationships, build better and longer lasting relationships, understand others better and tailor our behavior accordingly?

In my private practice as a certified Hypnotherapist, nearly 80% of the clients I see have issues in this area. They come for other issues but along the line I nearly always find relationship issues. So I started reading up more, researching and listening. And I discovered some fascinating facts about people. I realize we all have relationship personalities. These personalities are developed based on complex blend of childhood patterns of observing behavior between our caregivers, cultural influences, genetics, perceptions etc etc. But bottom line there are distinct relationship personalities. Each personality has its strenghts snd weaknesses (yeah, what's new about this :), there are pros and cons to everything, right?).

I am fascinated by the research done by Dr Kappas who founded the Hypnosis Motivation Institute and legalized Hypnotherapy as a professional job in the US. Understanding our relationship personality really works AWESOME in helping us understand not only our behavior but the behavior of the other person in our relationship. We can use our differences to bring magic and mystery in our relationships and use our similarities to facilitate change.

I am conducting classes in Bay Area, CA, to share these wonderful insights about our relationship personalities and help us all have healthier relationships and make this world a better place to live in. Yup, improve our emotional and mental health simultaneously.
